Alfred Joseph Hitchcock (1899-1980) was one of the few truly great genre directors and film auteurs whose filmmaking ability was to be recognised as combining the high-art aesthetic of cinematic technique (i.e.: mise-en-scène, motifs and other miscellaneous stylistic signatures so admired and promoted in the French publication, Cahiers du Cinema by Messrs. Bazin, Godard, Truffaut, Chabrol and Rohmer). This was in conjunction with enormous mass-audience box-office appeal and popularity, which (during the latter part of his Hollywood career) also included a long-running and highly successful television series entitled: Alfred Hitchcock Presents.     As a lover of Hitchcock films, I read this with interest. This is an academic article which is eminently readable. Fascinating insights into Hitchcock’s life and the use of camera techniques. The details made me want to watch the film again…which I did, watching from a different viewpoint. The film was even better having read this article.
