Boxing & Religion: Fury v Wilder I (Los Angeles 2018) Round 12 – The ‘Resurrection’ & ‘The Hand of Jesus’!

JD Morgan recalls one of the most remarkable moments in sporting history, when the huge frame of an unconscious Tyson Fury was spread across the ring canvas, completely motionless in Round 12 – having been knocked out cold by Deontay Wilder. Then, as if in a Hollywood movie, Fury woke up and proceeded to rise like The Terminator and finished the fight strongly which, ultimately, deprived his already-celebrating opponent of a knock-out victory. In discussing this truly remarkable ‘resurrection’, and, of course, its religious implications for Tyson Fury and others, JD seeks to encourage a resident deacon, who had no interest in Boxing, to watch the Round 12 of Fury v Wilder I on YouTube, which, as it turned out, resulted in a rather surprising outcome! Description

It is still to be determined how many chapters the Tyson Fury Story will occupy on the pages of Boxing History books, but truly great Heavyweight contests with underwritten themes that still resonate are, ‘The Colour Issue’ in the build-up for Jack Johnson v Jim Jeffries (Reno 1910), ‘The Great and the Good Against the Evils of Hitlerism’ in Joe Louis v Max Schmeling II (New York 1938) – ‘The Return of the Unjustly Dethroned King’ in The Rumble in the Jungle, Muhammad Ali v George Foreman (Kinshasa, Zaire 1974) and, of course, ‘The Battle of the Wills’ in the Thrilla in Manilla, Muhammad Ali v Joe Frazier III (Philippines 1975).

And although I am not a trained ‘lover of lexicon’ or even a ‘catchphrase connoisseur’, on this occasion, there is no need for an expert dictionary compiler from the Oxford University Press (OUP) to decide upon an historic name for the bout that turned Deacon James into a ‘convert’. All that really needs to be written for Tyson Fury v Deontay Wilder I (Los Angeles 2018) is ‘The Resurrection’. (Full story available for 99p using PayPal)
