The ‘Shoeshine Shuffle’ – My Obsession With Expensive Shoes! (Free of Charge)

(10 customer reviews)

JD Morgan explores his fascination for wearing expensive, hand-made and pristine polished shoes, which dates back to his days as an undergraduate at Oxford during the mid-80s when he would make a beeline to The Turl to stop off and stare into the window display of the city’s most famous shoemaker, Ducker & Son. JD’s love of high quality, hand-crafted shoes was a passion which continued into his later years travelling in Turkey, befriending shoe-shiners in the street, where he made many new friends and enjoyed lots of amusing adventures, one of which, unknown to JD at the time, had, inadvertently, ended in sad and tragic circumstances. (4,400 words)

‘Hi, Teacher!’, shouted one of the prisoners, as he raised his hand high in the air and waved vigorously in my direction from far across the exercise yard. ‘Hi, there!’, I called back, squinting as I did so, looking directly into the sun, not recognising his voice, nor knowing who was addressing me. ‘It’s been a long time!’, I yelled back, as I started to walk towards the small group of men, ‘And I haven’t set foot in this jail for years – so, thank you for remembering me!’ ‘No problem, Teacher!’, said the middle-aged prisoner, who, as I was now approaching, had diverted his gaze back to look at a homemade chessboard upon which were scattered an array of makeshift, hastily whittled wooden figures vaguely resembling kings, queens, bishops, knights and rooks, which had obviously been haphazardly chiselled out during an in-house woodwork session. ‘You’re dead easy to remember!’, he commented. ‘Is that so?’, I said, rather elated, and somewhat lifted by what he’d just said, ‘Were my classes that good?’, I enquired, fishing for a compliment or two, which, in a prison learning environment in those days, were few and far between. ‘No, your classes weren’t good at all, Teacher!’, he admitted, being open and frank with me. ‘To be perfectly honest, we all thought they were total shit, but boy – do we all remember your shoes!’
